A new day has come for many cities across Arkansas and
especially for Dumas. On December 4, not
only in our capitol city of Little Rock, but also in Dumas, we have new mayors
who are the first African Americans elected in the history of their cities. And
these mayors are just two of many other African American mayors throughout the state
now serving Arkansas from the smallest to the largest city.
What does this mean? In the case of Dumas with Flora Simon,
being both an African American and a female, I see this combination as one that
Dumas can uniquely apply and incorporate as ‘A CITY UNITED’ for progress in
Dumas and the Delta. Our city has a new testimony of how we have come together.
We have a new beginning to invite people near and abroad to come home to Dumas,
to see and celebrate; City P.R.I.D.E. – Positive Results in Dumas, EVERYDAY!
But more greatly, this tribute pays honor to the legacy
works of leaders who came before this generation who gave great sacrifices to
build dreams, visions, buildings and people that continue to represent the faith,
hope and love that they too would be proud to see going forth as we unite to do
our part.
My supreme voice of uplift is to God for allowing us to see
a new day in Dumas. It confirms His word
that with Him, ‘all things are possible to them that believe.’ It further affirms His word that He is no respecter
of persons. And for these reasons; WE
TRULY DO NOT WANT TO PROTEST PROGRESS.
I remember when President Obama was elected in 2008. I saw a
need to pray for him daily based on many reasons associated with historic
firsts. But beyond the daily prayers, I asked the Dumas Clarion to allow me to write (for one-year, 2009) and to have
others to join in with a weekly post entitled, Prayers for the President. Mr. Hawkins granted the request and the space
to do so. It provided multiple benefits
and was locally and nationally recognized.
And likewise; for sure we will be praying daily and in many ways for our
new mayor and for all our leaders to excel.
Love and blessings and Happy New Year to All of Dumas—United.
